A marble shower niche should be sized around the items it will hold, coordinated with the wall layout and detailed as part of the shower’s waterproof assembly. Specify the finished internal dimensions, stone arrangement, drainage and shelf support before fabrication.
The visible recess is only one part of the detail. Behind it are the wall construction, lining, waterproofing and installation materials. Each layer affects the final opening.
This guide covers niches lined in natural marble, including loose stone components and prefabricated assemblies. It focuses on design and specification rather than a universal installation method.
Start with Usable Storage
Establish what the niche needs to accommodate before choosing its proportions.
Measure representative bottles, including their pumps, and allow room to lift them out and operate them. Check the depth of the bottle base as well as its height. A recess that looks generous in elevation may still be too shallow for daily use.
Agree the finished sill height with the intended users. For accessible projects, coordinate storage with the applicable reach and accessibility requirements.
There is no single niche size or mounting height that suits every shower.
Distinguish Finished Dimensions from the Wall Opening
Draw the finished internal width, height and depth separately from the opening required in the wall construction.
| Dimension | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Wall opening | Space required for the complete niche assembly |
| Finished internal width | Clear storage space between the completed side returns |
| Finished internal height | Clearance above the sill or intermediate shelf |
| Finished internal depth | Usable depth after the backing and stone are installed |
| Shelf span | Distance between the supports carrying the shelf |
| Finished sill height | Storage level relative to the completed shower floor |
For example, a 600 mm wall opening will not provide 600 mm of usable storage after its side build-ups are installed. Have the installer and fabricator reconcile the dimensions before releasing the stone.
Choose the Niche Location with the Wall Designer
Confirm what occupies the wall before setting the recess.
Review framing, structure, pipes, valves and other services. Where the proposed niche affects an external wall or a wall with fire or acoustic requirements, coordinate the detail with the relevant designer.
A long niche may need a different wall arrangement from a small recess. Its proportions should follow the available construction and required storage.
Review the niche beside the shower controls, glass and panel joints. A position that looks balanced on a drawing may be awkward to reach from the shower’s normal standing position.
Horizontal, Vertical or Divided?
Each arrangement solves a different storage problem.
Horizontal niches place several items alongside one another. They create a strong line across the wall and require careful coordination of the opening, sill and surrounding panels.
Vertical niches can organize storage in stacked compartments. Set each compartment’s clear height around its intended contents, including pump operation and removal.
Divided niches can separate users or product types. Additional shelves introduce more edges, supports and surfaces to clean, so include them where they provide a practical benefit.
Test the arrangement with actual products or a simple full-size mock-up before fixing the dimensions.
Compose the Marble Before Cutting
Decide whether the niche should blend into the wall or form a deliberate contrast.
For a restrained composition, select its pieces alongside the wall panels and keep the tonal range controlled. For an accent niche, review the contrasting stone together with the surrounding finish.
Using the same marble name does not guarantee a close match. Review the actual material.
Mark the back, sides, head and sill on the proposed cutting layout. Identify the visible face and orientation of every piece. Where a particular vein is important, show its intended position rather than describing the niche only as “matching marble.”
VeraMarbles’ Afyon Violet marble guide provides a material-specific discussion of full-slab selection and planning openings before fabrication.
Matching Veins Across a Recess
Vein continuity is a composition to approve, not an automatic result of using one slab.
The back of a niche sits behind the wall face, and the returns change direction. Review the appearance in elevation and in a three-dimensional view.
A calm, compatible selection can be more convincing than a forced attempt to continue every vein across several planes.
Define What “One Piece” Means
“One-piece marble niche” can describe different products. Clarify what the supplier is offering.
| Construction | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Separate stone pieces | Component dimensions, assembly order, joints and installation responsibility |
| Preassembled stone box | Whether it is bonded from pieces, its weight, joint construction and installation method |
| Carved monolithic unit | Actual wall thicknesses, weight, handling and fixing requirements |
| Tile-ready prefabricated niche | Finished clear space after marble lining and compatibility with the selected wall system |
A preassembled appearance does not establish that an item was carved from one block. Nor does a stone box, by itself, establish a complete waterproof connection to the shower wall.
Request a section drawing and product information before approval.
Coordinate Waterproofing Through the Recess
Continue the selected waterproofing assembly through the niche and connect it to the surrounding shower wall.
Prefabricated tile-ready niches are one option. For example, Schluter describes KERDI-BOARD-SN as a sealed niche intended to integrate with its specified shower assemblies, with a KERDI-BAND frame for the connecting seams. That is a system-specific arrangement, not a detail to transfer automatically to another product. Schluter KERDI-BOARD-SN product guidance
Coordinate membrane connections, corners, fixings and any penetrations using the selected manufacturer’s current instructions. Confirm compatibility between the marble backing, setting materials and waterproofing system.
Sealing the visible marble does not resolve the concealed waterproofing detail.
Detail Drainage Without Guessing a Universal Slope
Resolve how water leaves the sill and any intermediate shelf.
Schluter’s guidance for the prefabricated shelf in its KERDI-BOARD-SN niche describes creating a slope through the shelf or tile setting to prevent pooling. Apply the instructions relevant to the selected assembly. Schluter niche shelf installation guidance
The project drawing should establish the direction and required fall, coordinated with the waterproofing and finish detail. Check that the front edge, joints and installation tolerances do not create a lip that holds water.
Review drainage before handover using the testing and acceptance procedure appropriate to the project.
Specify Shelf Support Alongside Thickness
A stone shelf’s suitability depends on its material, unsupported span, depth, thickness, natural features and support arrangement.
Do not select thickness from appearance alone or treat a photograph as evidence that a long shelf will perform.
Show how an intermediate shelf is supported and agree the intended load with the fabricator and installation designer. Coordinate any concealed support with the waterproofing detail.
A shelf for toiletries should not be treated as a grab bar, seat or foot support. If those functions are required, specify purpose-designed elements separately.
Choose Edges That Can Be Made and Maintained
Compare eased exposed edges, butt-jointed pieces, mitred returns or a frame around the opening.
Review the proposed treatment using the actual stone and thickness. Resolve visible joints, finish continuity and the handling of vulnerable corners with the fabricator.
Also check how the sill meets the side returns and wall face. These junctions influence the visual result, installation sequence and cleaning access.
For a repeated hotel detail, approve a representative sample before bulk production.
Include Cleaning in the Design Review
The niche must remain usable when it contains everyday products.
Avoid placing shelves so close together that bottles cannot be removed or surfaces cleaned. Review corners and joints for access rather than judging the niche only when empty.
The Natural Stone Institute recommends suitable neutral cleaning products and explains the acid sensitivity of calcareous stone. Its guidance also distinguishes impregnating repellents from treatments that make stone impervious. Natural Stone Institute care guidance
For hospitality projects, agree compatible cleaning products with housekeeping and include them in the handover information. Confirm any stone treatment with its supplier for the specific marble and wet-area use.
Fabrication Approval Checklist
Before releasing the niche components, confirm:
- Finished internal dimensions and sill height.
- Wall opening and complete lining build-up.
- Approved stone, finish and visual range.
- Component identification and vein orientation.
- Joint positions and edge details.
- Sill and shelf drainage.
- Shelf span, support and intended load.
- Waterproofing connections and fixing arrangement.
- Installation sequence and handling requirements.
- Sample or mock-up approval and cleaning instructions.
For repeated bathrooms, identify which dimensions are fixed and how site tolerances will be accommodated. Avoid resolving variation through unplanned cuts to finished stone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a marble niche be added to an existing shower?
Possibly, but first assess the wall construction, services and existing waterproofing. Adding the recess may require opening and rebuilding part of the shower assembly; it is not simply a stone insert.
Should the niche match the surrounding marble?
It can match, coordinate or contrast. Approve the actual pieces together, since the same commercial marble name does not guarantee identical tone or veining.
Is a marble niche supplied as one solid piece?
Sometimes, but the description may also refer to a box assembled from separate pieces. Confirm the construction, weight and installation requirements with the supplier.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Provide the finished internal dimensions, wall section, stone and finish, shelf arrangement, edge detail, quantity and delivery location. Identify whether the enquiry concerns stone components or a more complete assembly.
